Under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER 98) and Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 98), a Thorough Examination will assess a truck’s mast, chains, carriage, forks, tilt mechanism, overhead guard, steering, seat mountings, tyres and brakes on a yearly basis, or sooner if necessary.
Holding a valid Report of Thorough Examination is a legal requirement for all forklift truck operators, whether it is owned, leased or on hire. Failure to produce this report can lead to prosecution or invalidation of insurance. The report is considered very similar to the MOT system in the motor industry.
Failing to comply could be disastrous: prosecution, invalidation of your insurance or worst of all, a serious accident due to faulty equipment.
